What Is Self Esteem And How Do You Know If Yours Is High?

Here's a question that many people ask themselves, what is self esteem?

We can think of self esteem as the worth or significance that we place on ourselves.

In a time where images of beauty are skewed and unrealistic, and when our economy is uncertain, the issue of self esteem is front of mind a lot more than usual.

Of course self esteem can be low or high. High or a positive self esteem is what we should all aim to achieve.

Having a positive self image and strong self esteem are values that should be encouraged from a young age. When a child asks "what is self esteem?" They should be told that it is having a positive concept of yourself.

It's all about feeling satisfied and content with yourself and it's about having a generally positive outlook on life.

Self esteem is a quiet confidence. It's being aware that you are worthy of happiness. Self esteem is divided into two parts. Self efficacy and self respect.

Self efficacy refers to the fact that you are confident in your abilities and mental capacity. You have the self assurance to try new things and the knowledge that if you fail at a task it's not a set back but a learning experience.

Self respect is the understanding that you are of great value and importance and that you are deserving of happiness and love. Self efficacy and self respect go hand in hand.

Realizing that these two aspects are not in alignment is just one of the many low self esteem signs that will be explored elsewhere on this website.

Having a positive self image is all about the ability to celebrate all your wins. It's your ability to set goals to achieve greater self growth. It's not beating yourself down. It's being able to get over your mistakes.

You owe it to yourself to learn more about what is self esteem, it will challenge you to examine the way your view yourself and will encourage you to have a healthier, more positive self image.

If you think you may be having issues with your self image, you may want to consider getting some self esteem help.

That will be found on subsequent pages such as self esteem activities,

self esteem exercises and self esteem programs.
