Student Goals Will Help You See What You Want To Achieve Early On
Educators should introduce student goals in schools to give them a drive to pursue great things and to excel. When goals are set and later achieved, students gain confidence in themselves. This gives more confidence to aim for even better things. They would be more able to set effective goals and have a great understanding of how to plan for their courses of action in advance. With student goals, they have a basis for why they are doing certain things or why they have to learn certain subjects in school. For example, they will appreciate Math and English subjects if they know how they can be useful in everyday lives. Excelling in English, for instance, equips them with good communication skills. Being good in Math helps them weather a potential financial crisis and make other computations faster. Student Goals: How to Do It Effectively Many students have quite big dreams. However, in goal setting for students, big goals should be divided into short term goals. They say patience is a virtue and good things happen to those who are patient. In this case, students must learn how to make small or baby steps first rather than taking a big leap. They have to plan how they can get to their big goals and go through their plan of action step by step. This will make big dreams more achievable. To effectively set goals, students must have goals that are specific. They cannot just say they want to be successful some day. Success could mean a lot of things depending on the person. So, they have to specify what they really want to achieve. Goals should also include a time frame and they should be measurable. They should be able to evaluate if they have indeed reached their goal. Goals should never be stated in a negative statement. Students shouldn't say "I don’t want to fail a single subject this semester." Instead, they should say "I want to pass all my subjects this semester. Goals and objectives should also be realistic. Goals like wanting to be the most popular singer is highly unlikely ,especially if the student does not even know how to carry a tune. Of course, goals like getting a six figure salary might be impossible now. However, such a goal can be achieved by formulating short term goals and achieving each one of them until they reach that goal within the specified time frame. Again planning is important, so with every goal a set of actions should be laid out. If the student wants to graduate in two years, he must divide all his remaining credits by the number of remaining semesters and plan which ones to take every remaining semester. Students are likely going to meet some barriers along the way. But they should not give up easily. They have to be flexible and find ways to get around every hindrance. One thing must be made clear when introducing goal setting for students though. Goals don’t necessarily come to fruition no matter how systematic students set and plan for them. However, their chances of succeeding increases the better they are at goal setting and planning.
