Setting Career Goals And Managing Your Career

Setting career goals is often a tricky task in that there is a lot to consider. But everything could easily fall into place if you plan accordingly.

It is so important to be happy in your career and to have a sense of fulfillment. If you are unhappy in your career it is more likely that you will be unhappy in other areas in your life.

Setting Career goals will help you put the ball back into your court and figure out how you can achieve ultimate happiness and success in your career.

Setting career goals is useful to people who are just figuring out what they want to do, as well as for those who are looking to move up in their current jobs or those looking to move out from their current jobs! What ever your career objectives maybe it's time to start focusing your time and energy towards achieving your goals and stop beating around the bush.

The big picture has to be crystal clear in your mind. You may need to do a bit of soul searching to figure out exactly what you want in your working life.

If you're serious about setting career goals, you must explore the reasons why you want to achieve this particular goal and remember it's all about what's best for you.

The following guidelines are of particular importance for those of you who are first time job hunters and those of you who are thinking about a career change.

  • Determine your purpose in life. This sounds like a big one, but it really is important to try and identify what you think your life purpose may be. A good idea would be to ask friends and family what your strengths and weaknesses are. Pay close attention to the things that bring you the most joy and be honest with yourself.

  • Identify your skills, talents and abilities. Take into consideration the education you have received, the work that you may have down thus far and even skill sets or abilities acquired from life experiences. Again those who know you the best maybe able to help you with this as well.

  • Determine your interest and passion. Researchers say that people who are most happy in their jobs say they are doing something they are truly passionate about. Answer this question.

What would you happily do even if you weren't getting paid for it? This is not about what your parents or spouses think; this is your passion, it's about what you think. Figure out your passion first and then ways to make money will come afterward.

  • What is it that drives you?Think about the values that truly motivate you and make a list. Here are a few common motivators. Money, Love, Health,Fun, Contribution, Recognition,Security, Growth, Power and Freedom.

Once you've accomplished those few steps toward setting career goals, things will appear much more clear in your mind. You will now need to do some research into the various career options open to you.

Consider doing some job shadowing, it's an excellent way to weed out the career choices you definitely do not want.

The more you learn about your career options, the closer you will get to determining what additional skills and other resources you may need to acquire that goal faster.

If you want to be a fashion designer you may need to develop better sewing skills or brush up on your knowledge of current fashion trends. Setting a career goal helps you determine all the action steps necessary to your goal.

Take a few moments to refer to the S.M.A.R.T goal setting page. Remember you need to break your goal up into smaller sections. Set short term goals that have your long term goal in mind.

You must also remember to be flexible, as you get older you may find that your interests and values may change. Perhaps you may find that your career may loose relevancy in this fast changing world we live in.

Your career objectives may change but setting career goals will always be applicable. Start your journey to career success today.
