Do Your Personal Habits Compromise Your Success?

When we talk about personal habits, we are referring to a pattern of behavior or activity that a person develops that often happens automatically. Believe it or not a particular tendency can determine the kind of person that you are.

As many of you know there are indeed good practices or inclinations as well as bad ones. Things like cleanliness and being on time are generally encouraged and are thought of as good practices.

It is amazing how our brains so easily slip into familiar routines. It is said that out of every 11,000 signals that are received from our various senses, our brains only consciously processes 40.

Only 40! Just like autopilot on an airplane there are certain practices that we sometimes unconsciously put into place. We have actually structured most of our lives to be inherently habitual.

You shower everyday, probably at the same time, perhaps even scrubbing each body part in the same order!

Given this fact one might be able to see how detrimental this could potentially be to achieving new goals. The routine or the behavior that we mindlessly fall into, can cause us to stay in our comfort zones.

This becomes particularly challenging for anyone trying to achieve a particular goal since, as mentioned before, comfort zones will keep you in a state of 'sameness' and inhibit you from taking on a new approach or task.

Many of you can quickly think of a tendency that has been holding you back from achieving something. Perhaps it's procrastination, bad time management skills or maybe even tardiness.

Most people think of these kinds of practices as strictly a behavior but it can also be a thought, habitual thoughts can often fuel a bad pattern of behavior.

For example constant negative thoughts could force you to alwayslook for the bad in things and cause you to be over critical.

It is possible to consciously acquire new personal habits and in the next few pages we will explore a number of ways for you to do this. You will also discover the behaviors and activities of successful people.

Understand that the key to developing a new personal habit and breaking old ones is to constantly force yourself to step out of your comfort zone.

The more you practice doing new things, the easier it will become for you to set new goals and reach new milestones in your personal and professional life.
