Leadership Versus Management? Which One Do You Have Your Money On?
Leadership versus management. Which process is more ideal? Are they the same thing? How are they different? There will always be great discussions over the two. The bottom line is no, they are not the same thing but they are both very important and the two should be used together. There is a popular saying that goes "leadership is when you do the right things and management is when you do things the right way." In order for you to fully grasp the concept let's break down each skill set and explore what they each mean. Management: This is the main focal point, it's what gives an organization structure. Management is very focused on looking at anorganization from within. Management is seldom concerned with looking ahead. Managers represent management and theyessentially provide resources. They are very hands on and focus on operations and generally everything happening now. Leadership: At it's core leadership is about providing vision. When the organizational environment changes as it often does, thisis when things really shift from management to leadership. Leaders possess leadership skills. They deal with change, they determine the direction of the organization, they focus on goals and most importantly on the future. When it comes to leadership versus management there is no real winner. Organizations need both in order to be well-rounded. Management deals with daily tasks and activities and delivers results. Leadership thinks about the big picture of the organization and seeks out opportunities for change and growth. But without a proper management structure the goal and the vision will not be put into action. The two must go hand in hand.
