Find Out Why Leadership Is Like A Second Language With These Leadership Training Exercises

Leadership needs to be nurtured and updated, a good way to keep it current is to use leadership training exercises. Your leadership skills are like a second language if you don't practice it often, you'll lose it!

Many companies find it useful to have their managers and executives do exercises to develop leadership skills. New leadership trends are constantly emerging.

Everyday new technology is released that may improve or hamper a leaders' efforts. They need to be made aware of the changes in their environment.

Leadership training exercises focus on a number of things like improving decision making, risk taking, communications exercisesand many other skills.

Here are some exercises to try on for size:

  • Have your leadership team pair up and take turns being an employee who's breaking the rules or a boss/manager who istrying to enforce the rules.

This exercise will help your leaders stand in the shoes of their subordinates and it also helps them to practice using the kind of leadership skills needed to deal with disputes involving employees.

  • Another exercise would be to have your group throw out definitions on what leadership actually is.

You will notice a few differences here and there in the definition of leadership. This will act as a refresher for your group of leaders, they will be reminded of the core concepts of leadership and will be on their guard to try and spot good examples from within your group of leaders.

Incorporate a flip chart and some bright markers to right down the different ideas about leadership that emerge.

  • Splitting leaders up into pairs is a great way to facilitate effective learning. You may have an exercise where the pairs are blind folded and as a result will have to use their vocabulary and their 'gift of the gab' to sort out potential issues or discrepancies.

This exercise will accurately mirror communication via phone conversation when you can't actually see the body language and facial features of the person you are communicating with.

Faye Wattleton has been quoted as saying " whoever is providing leadership needs to be as fresh and thoughtful and reflective as possible to make the very best fight."

Leadership training exercises will help you do just that.
