Leadership and Communication Skills, A Must For Getting The Right Message Across
It’s no joke to have poor leadership and communication skills. Especially in situations where conflicts arise, having the wrong skills in communication will inevitably result in increased tension and more misunderstandings between everyone involved. To put it bluntly, bad skills in your communication will only lead to the destruction of a team or a relationship. To help you avoid falling into this pitfall, here a few pointers you can use to beef up your leadership and communications skills: 1. Listen, and listen well. This one of the major shortcomings of most people, the inability to really listen to another’s views and opinions. Failure to listen limits the potential of a project or task, as other people also have important points to make and contribute. Failure to listen also sends a message of disrespect to the other person, and will only be counterproductive in the long run. Just think of it, would you like for other people to just pretend to listen to you instead of actually paying attention to what you’re saying? 2. Consider that you might be wrong. Or at least consider that they might be saying something right. You are not perfect, but the tendency of most people is to immediately discard or counter another’s opinion or input. Having too much pride can be detrimental to developing the proper skills to communicate, and has no place in a mature conversation or meeting. Considering what other people say will also help to weed out mistakes in a team effort or project, resulting in quality output that reflects on you. Inversely, bad output from narrow-minded thinking will also reflect poorly on your performance. Also be prepared to take criticism from others. It may hurt at times, but you have to take it, for the sake of the matter at hand. Besides, you’ll be dishing out criticism of your own so it’s only fair, isn’t it? 3. Take responsibility for your ideas. If your idea turns out to be good, then reap the benefits. After all, you deserve it.But just the same be ready to take the blame if things head south. You’ll be giving everyone else a good example of responsibility, and they’ll respect you more and be more willing to work with you again in the future. 4. Compromise will save the day. Never adopt an “all or nothing” approach, because you will get nothing done. Always be open to a compromise where everyone will be happy. You can’t please everyone, true, but at least everyone knows they have a piece of the pie, that's what it means to have great leadership and communication skills.
