Improving Communication Skills Is Essential

The value of improving communication skills is undeniable. It’s quite known that people tend to listen to others who are able to express themselves quite eloquently. People are impressed by others who are confident and sure of themselves in public.

At work, your verbal skills are only a part of the equation. You must also have very good writing skills. When you have excellent verbal and written skills you are at an advantage.

Your listening skills also play a large role. You have to learn how to listen carefully so you can understand and follow instructions. A person who listens to others is also most often well-liked by coworkers and bosses.

Working On Improving Communication Skills

Be conscious of the tone of your voice. When talking to a coworker be careful not offend them even when you are correcting them. Do not be too enthusiastic as people may tend to take it the wrong way. Even if you are angry, try to talk in an even voice as much as possible. This way, coworkers won’t be offended and they will take your criticism in a good way.

The same goes for reprimanding coworkers in written communications. The tone of your letter or memo should be as even as possible. You should also allow them to explain their side. Give them leeway and let them express themselves. But again control your anger and be composed always.

If you give a compliment, make sure you are sincere. Otherwise, do not say anything, because people will know if you are not being sincere.

When talking to a group of coworkers, it’s important that you have your listeners’ full attention. So when talking about a boring topic, create ways to make the talk lively. Spice up the talk or the conversation with jokes and anecdotes to connect with your listeners. Rise to the occasion when your communication skills are being tested.

For more difficult situations like public speaking or the tough talks with your boss, what you can do is role play with your spouse or with a friend first. So if you are asking for a raise, for example, let your wife or your husband play the role of your boss and practice your dialogue with him or her. If you are going to give a talk to a group of coworkers, practice your speech or lecture with your spouse or your friend as the audience. Ask them if your lecture was clear enough or if there were rough parts. Maybe your lecture is too long or boring. Then try to improve based on their comments. Practice answering the difficult questions that your coworkers may ask you. In developing communication skills, practice certainly helps a lot.

Since sending emails is now the most common mode of communication, improving your emails is one way of improving communication skills. Some emails are meant to be formal so begin by making sure that you are addressing the recipient properly. People with good communication skills also proofread their emails before sending them out. So to polish your skills, always be thorough in your correspondences.
