Why insecure people may not be able to adopt the democratic leadership style

Is the democratic leadership style for you? Well,if you're an open leader and you like working within a group sharing ideas and solutions, then most likely it's right up your alley.

Democratic leadership is also known as participative leadership because as the name suggests this leadership style greatlyvalues the input and participation of the entire team. Even though democratic leaders encourage participation they keep theright to have the final say.

So when is it most appropriate to use this type of leadership style? It's most effective in a dynamic and ever changingenvironment. The democratic leader must keep conversation and discussion flowing within their team in order for ideas andsolutions to arise.

The democratic or participative leader is at the very least a facilitator. They gather up information from the team, keeps the good ideas and sets aside the impractical ones. Then the collective ideas are lumped together to get the best solution.

While collecting and considering the concerns of the entire team is great for motivation and team building it's not that greatwhen time is of the essence. All those extra steps might slow down the decision making process.

On the other hand, the democratic leadership style is great for developing the skills and talents of a team as a whole. Internal growth and team work is very much encouraged, but as mentioned before there are also a few situations when this leadership style may not be as useful. In situations where there is little room for error, or in an environment where safety is key, delegating responsibilities and taking ideas from the entire team may not be as cost effective or productive.

It should also be noted that if you are the kind of leader that is not quite yet comfortable in your own skin or perhaps you haven't yet developed the proper leadership skills you may feel a little threatened by this leadership style. This style places a lot of emphasis on the team and less on the leader as the star. Some people may not be able to handle that loss of stardom.

The mere fact that you are interested in learning about the democratic leadership style and different leadership styles in general, shows that you determined to be a good leader.

All leadership styles have their advantages and disadvantages, the important this is being aware of these pros and cons so that you are able to make an educated decision about how you plan to lead your next team.
