Writing company mission statements is important to most companiesbecause it gives them a guide for their everyday operations, and their goal and strategy plans. It also gives people a morale and a motivational guide in their work. It gives them a reason why the company has to operate in a certain way.

Contrary to the vision statement, the company mission statement focuses mainly on the present status of the company instead of the future. In short, this statement mainly defines why the business is in existence.

A companies mission typically define the passion of the company. While many companies have their statements printed, framed and hanged in their walls, their goals and objectives statement should mean more to them than just a set of words and a decoration on the wall. They should believe in what is stated there and they should do everything to uphold the belief being advocated in their objectives statement. In fact, when people are truly passionate about it they would not compromise it even with a promise of large amounts of money.

Formulating this statement seems simple at first. But it’s actually not when you are defining what your business is about in just one statement. The companies mission should also have meaning both to the people within the company and to your clients and customers. That is why writing the companies mission down normally demands a brainstorming session. That is when the company values and philosophy are debated until everybody agrees on a single mission for the company.

Again, a companies mission statement typically describe the main purpose of the company. So, you have to ask yourself what really is the purpose of your business. And then you should also name who you want to serve. Is it the partners,the stockholders or your customers?

Then you have to indicate what needs the company intends to fulfill and how the company plans to fulfill these needs. You have to know your target customers so you’ll know if you are fulfilling their needs effectively.

And again, beliefs of the company have to be clearly defined in the mission statement too.

Characteristics of Meaningful Mission for A Company

It is said that one way of testing if your mission makes sense is to make your mother read it. If she totally gets it, then your mission statement is quite meaningful. But if she does not, then it’s time to start from scratch again.

Your companies mission statement should make an impact. But more than to anyone, it should inspire and keep you motivated the most. Remember that the mission is about you and your business. So you should write what you and the company believes in. You should write what the passion and philosophy of the company is about.

In addition to that, when formulating your objectives statement, you should focus on the core competency of the company. If the company provides cleaning services, the company mission statements should focus on how well the company can provide such services to its customers and why it's important to the company.
