Perhaps you have already made a career choice but you are having second thoughts, you could be looking for the perfect job or maybe you are exploring ways to reach your full potential in your current job. When it comes to matters relating to your career, career goal setting is the answer.

Issues surrounding your career are often very delicate because for many people, their career plays a huge role in their lives. But despite this if you are serious about career goal settingyou must be persistent and flexible.

Setting career goals require you to change your mindset. You must recognize that external forces do not determine your career path, you do. Recondition your mind and understand that it is your own beliefs, values and action steps that create results.

Career goal setting is all about committing to take action and having a step by step plan.

People who are successful in their careers aren't just lucky as you may think. They work smartly and plan out their goals.

The goal setting formula remains the same but the area of application varies.

Figure out what your career goal is and write it down clearly and specifically. Be realistic and pay attention to yourstrengths and weaknesses.

Some examples of a goal include " I will have a full time job as a business consultant for (company) by January 2009", "I will hand in my letter of resignation to John Doe on September 1st 2009" or "I will become senior partner of ABC company by January 31st, 2009"

Remember time lines are important. It gives the goal structure and you are able to establish a specific end date.

When setting a career goal you must identify the people,resources or organizations that you will need to accomplish your goal. This might be a coach to help you with presentation skills, job banks or perhaps a specialist to help you update your resume.

You will also need to list the obstacles and set backs you may encounter in achieving your career goal. This way there will be no surprises and you will know how to respond accordingly.

Then of course determine your plan of action. What exact steps will you take to accomplish this goal. If applicable break it down monthly, weekly and daily. The benefits will be worth all the extra effort you put in.

Career goal setting is an amazing process that will help you to set, plan, track, and manage all your career goals and help you find that dream job.
