Effective Career goal setting and time management skills







Let's talk a little about career goal setting and time management and how they relate to each other. If you want find success in your career, it's important to find that delicate balance between goal setting and time management.

Career goal setting, as mentioned on previous pages, is a very effective way to ensure that you are actively moving in the right direction in terms of your career.

Setting career goals will add more focus and positivity to your goals. With that being said, proper time management habits will greater guarantee that you will actually see these career goals become a reality.

It doesn't matter if you are looking for a new job or if you are trying to optimize your performance in your current job. Effective time management will infuse structure and balance to all your career objectives.

In our approach to career goal setting and time management, it's helpful to take a look at some of the common mistakes people make when it comes to managing their time as they achieve career goals.

Lack of priorities/objectives: This is actually one of the biggest time wasters and it affects us in our personal lives as well as in our careers.

People who accomplish more daily tasks always know exactly what they want to get done beforehand. Once you determine your career goals, you will create a plan of action to get there.

With that general action plan in mind, create a daily prioritized "to do list" based on your action plan.

Attempting too much: It is true that you should approach your career goals aggressively and energetically, but it doesn't mean that you have to accomplish everything in one day.

Many of you are guilty of this and you don't leave yourself enough time to do things properly and the quality of your work suffers.

Procrastination: Procrastination and time management are best buds. Very often the problem is not decision making but decision avoidance. The thing about setting career goals is that you may procrastinate because you feel overwhelmed.

You can avoid the feeling of being swamped by breaking your tasks into smaller, manageable sections. Start with the smaller tasks that you know you can manage and make your way up.

If you're looking for a job, for example, don't think about your entire job search all at once, take it a little at a time.

At the end of each day take some time to actually plan and write down your tasks and activities for the next day. This will do wonders in terms of keeping your momentum going from day to day.

Finding that balance between career goal setting and time management takes time and effort. But if you are serious about your career goals, developing proper time management skills is definitely worth your while.

By simply making a few changes to your daily life, you can add lots more direction, structure and clarity to your career goals.
