Career Development Plan and Goal Setting

Career development planning and goal setting will take you a long way in terms of how successful you are in your career.

It is tough to be successful in your career without goal setting, but you can be even more successful with it. Along with career development planning and goal setting, a major indicator of career success is attitude.

No matter how unstable the job market may be or how many obstacles may be in your way; people who are successful in their careers are willing to do what it takes to achieve their goals. Even if those tasks are difficult at first.

Challenging and asserting yourself will give you a big pay out in the form of a successful career.

Ask yourself are you staying on top of changes or advancements in your industry? Do you need to gain new skills that employers are looking for? Are you focused on getting results or on tasks?

Here is a career development plan that involves the principles of goal setting. The plan outlines the steps you would need to take to reach your career goals.

1. Plan you career effectively for the future.

2. Set realistic short term goals clearly stating where you want to be in 6 months

3. Outline medium term goals which identify where you want to be in 12-18 moths time

4. Define your long term career goals, that state where you want to be in 5 years time.

When we talk about career goals, it can refer to beginning a new occupation, moving up the ladder in your current career or increasing your earning potential.

A big part of career planning and goal setting is the idea of setting both long term and short term goals. As mentioned above you can also include medium term goals as a kind of middle ground.

Think of your long term goals as your final destination, medium term goals as your half way mark and short term goals as your first steps on your journey towards your final destination.

From a travel stand point you can see how these three components are very essential for a successful trip. Use this analogy now in relation to your career.

For many people, trying to achieve a new career goal can seem daunting just due to the mere size of the under taking. where do I start looking for a new job? What skills do I need? Who do I need to speak to?

When we think of our career goals as one huge project, it's easy to get overwhelmed and shy away from trying to reach the goal. Long term and short term goals will help you break down your task and take it one step at a time.

This compartmentalized version of your goal is more manageable and allows you to more easily wrap your head around the steps you have to take. You will automatically feel your confidence and will power coming back to you, and you will finally regain the motivation to push ahead to land that dream job.

People who are successful in their careers often say they feel in control of their own success. Breaking down your goals will give you this sense of control.

You will find your attitude will change and you will no longer be afraid to pursue those tasks that lead to success in your career. This doesn't mean you will now have absolutely no fear, but it means that you will accept what needs to get done and pay attention to the tasks that will produce results.

Career planning and goal setting really do go together and when used in conjunction you will really see a difference in terms of your ability to achieve your career goals.
