Breaking bad habits for good
Breaking bad habits is very important. You should be able to recognize and get rid of your bad habits, but you must also be concerned with replacing a bad behavior. No doubt about it, it's hard to break a pattern, but it can be just as challenging to take on a new, more positive one. If you are serious about setting and achieving goals then more than likely there are some patterns and practices that you should work on developing. Effective time management is one that springs to mind. As we always suggest the first step to replacing a bad pattern of behavior is of course identifying the pattern that you need to replace and then figuring out the new pattern or practices that you will begin to develop. It is said that all patterns have a rhythm, they all follow a certain pattern of response. If you work on breaking up the rhythm, you can crack the habit. To help identify the rhythm of your habit, pay close attention to the occasions when the habit you are trying to replace is most prevalent. Times, places, when you are around certain people. Being more consciously aware of your behavior is key, because you are more likely to realize what you are doing and stop yourself from doing it. You will also want to try to think of a competing behavior or response that you can do when you find yourself wanting to perform a particular task. For example you can't play video games if your hands are occupied with another task. When breaking bad habits, you have to got to constantly remind yourself of the benefits or great reasons why you should replace this habit. This is help to further motivate you. Statistics have shown that it takes 30 days to form a pattern and 90 days to form a habit, good or bad. The key here is to be consistent and just keep at it. Very often people fall back into a bad habit after successfully replacing it. If that happens start over begin at day 1 and make your way back up to 90 days. It's a lot of work but the results will be worthwhile. Breaking a bad habit is indeed a process. If you are trying to pick up a new habit, giving yourself rewards for good work is a good way to keep you motivated. In addition to that, a system of rewards is in itself a great new habit to adopt. The support of friends and family is key. You will want to try to remain stress free during this entire period. So communicate this to those close to you. Bring a friend on board, one who you can trust and rely on, to help push and support you to replace a bad habit. Your mind is a powerful tool that can very often work against you. When breaking bad habits you are essentially reprogramming your brain and that takes dedication and concentration. Utilizing the above methods will help to make the process of replacing unwanted habits a little smoother.
